A lot of spiritual exercises focus on moving energy up the spine. In today’s world the intellect rules. This already directs a lot of energy upwards toward the head. Activities common in the western world – watching tv, playing on the internet – keep us further mind engaged.
I had a strange symptom after my kundalini awakening. There was an energy vortex at the top of my head. It was very unpleasant, and my intuition told me this was more than just an ascension symptom that would pass.
I got the help I needed and the energy headaches went away. What I learned to heal the headaches changed my spiritual path forever. I learned that energy flows in our body south to north, but also north to south.
I knew that I needed to open the energy channels in my body to move from north to south. I was given a grounding exercise that helped with this. Synchronicity also guided me to Taoism, which has been very helpful to me since my kundalini awakening. I learned that severe ascension symptoms and “zen sickness” just don’t happen in Taoism. Energy is raised in such a way that the body is prepared to handle it. Many of the Taoist exercises I now practice focus on bringing chi down the front line of the body.
Taoists usually recommend the Microcosmic Orbit for people who have had a kundalini awakening. I felt intuitively that this might be a bit much for me. I have become so sensitive to energy that I wanted to move forward slowly. So I started with the Inner Smile meditation. This exercise moves energy down, away from the head. It has been so very helpful to me.
Mantak Chia is a Taoist Master and many of his teachings are available for free on youtube. You can find the Inner Smile Meditation I practice here. I also practice Lee Holden’s Inner Smile Meditation.
You may notice that beliefs come to the surface to be transformed when doing this and other grounding exercises. That’s a good thing and a sign of true transformation.
