So you had a spiritual awakening, and 3 am wakeups have become your new normal. Are you tossing and turning, and waking up in the middle of the night overloaded with energy? Then the next day finds you tired and groggy from lack of sleep. Can you relate? This was a challenge for me during my spiritual awakening.
Sometimes disrupted sleep is temporary, and normal sleep shortly returns. But what if you are having a prolonged spiritual awakening? A long stretch of dark night of the soul? That’s when spiritual awakening and 3 am wakeups truly become a nuisance.
Disrupted sleep happens for two main reasons during a spiritual awakening. First, negative energies need to clear out. This can effect mood, hormone levels, the nervous system and more. During my spiritual awakening all of my negative imprints came up, one after the other, to heal. For a while I felt like a swimmer lost in the middle of a turbulent ocean. Some moments were calm and I could tread water. Then the next wave arose and I was underwater again. This was during the intense stage of my awakening. It eventually passed.
The other reason sleep problems happen during a spiritual awakening is because of the new energies coming in. The physical body needs to adjust to the higher frequencies. These expanded energies often come in during sleep. They are sometimes the cause of 3 am wakeups which leave you feeling energized.
If you’re having lots of nighttime disturbances, you may want to write down the exact time of your wakeup. 1 am – 3 am is considered the liver time in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). During intense spiritual awakening, the liver can give off a lot of heat as old imprints are cleared out. If your wakeups happen between 1-3 am, you may be processing anger. I used Chinese herbs, milk thistle, and eating lightly to support my liver. It helped to reduce my middle of the night disturbances.
If your wakeups happen in the 3 am – 5 am window, your lungs may need support. This usually happens when someone is processing a lot of grief. If you find yourself coughing, or having breathing issues, along with wakeups during 3-5 am, our lung energy may need support.
Some people move through the sleeping difficulty part of spiritual awakening rather easily. For others, it can be more challenging. I’ve observed that caretakers – particularly parents – seem to have a harder time. So much energy is spent on caring for children, and sleep is usually lacking to begin with if there are young children in the house.
If you can move through sleep disruptions during spiritual awakening easily, that’s great. For those having a prolonged spiritual awakening, where lack of sleep has left them feeling unwell, I recommend supporting the physical body. So many important functions happen during sleep. On a physical level, the process of autophagy – cleaning out old and damaged cells – happens during sleep. There are physical components and toxins that need to be released from the body when big shifts are made. Deep sleep, so the body can repair and rewire, is necessary. During sleep the physical mind can perform subconscious cleanup, and connection can be made with the Soul. Both of these are vital during spiritual awakening.
A prolonged and intense awakening left me tired and depleted. Healing with Taoism and bioenergetics helped. Soon I was feeling better than ever. Learning to ground, to work with the energy of Earth and Sun, helped me to heal. I’ll be sharing more about this topic in my upcoming booklet “The Ultimate Guide to Grounding.” You can learn more about an easy way to ground and let go of negative energy while you sleep in my blog post on Sleeping Grounded.
